The second-generation 3 Series, internally designated the E30, made its debut in 1982 and was available with sedan and wagon bodies. The E30 was the first-ever M3, using the high-revving BMW S14 four-cylinder engine to deliver racecar like performance and handling. Although the E30’s fuel injection system and aerodynamic characteristics made the new 3 Series much more fuel efficient than previous models, a turbodiesel version of the 3 Series was introduced in 1985.
